Too Tired to Explain

For when you're worn out and your mind won't stop

What to expect

This is for the end of a long day, when you’re worn out but your mind keeps running on big ideas, plans and arguments. You don’t have to explain anything here.

A calm voice brings your attention down from the thinking into your body. You feel the tiredness, and any disappointment, just as heavy as they are. Nothing gets fixed. Then the day’s work stops, and you come back with your eyes open for the rest of the evening. It isn’t a sleep meditation.

Under it, soft deep house plays with a gentle beat. The beat drifts into the distance for the middle and comes back for the end. Low binaural tones sit under the music.

How to listen:

  • In the afternoon or evening, sitting or lying down. Never while driving.
  • Headphones help. In the middle the voice comes close, as if beside you.
  • You can move, sigh or shift whenever you like.

About

Safety and aftercare. You can stop at any point. Take a moment before you stand up at the end. If you’ve been exhausted for weeks, or a low mood isn’t lifting, talk to a doctor or someone you trust. Tiredness like that is worth looking at. This is a way of resting. It isn’t a treatment for anything.

Opening

Some days, explaining how tired we are is another thing to carry.

Tiredness can be here before we find words for it.

You can leave the explanation for another time.

Shift until something takes your weight.

Let your eyes close.

Breathe in through the nose.

A long, slow breath out.

Let breathing happen by itself.

Part One: The size of one body

Any big ideas can carry on.

No thought needs answering.

Bring attention down into the body.

You may find little or nothing.

Sense the length of the body.

Width, side to side.

Depth, front to back.

The places where you are held.

Everything inside the skin.

Part Two: Nothing to hold up

Give the whole weight downward.

Let the face go slack.

Shoulders may sink.

Open the hands.

Nothing to explain to anyone.

No fixing anything today.

Part Three: As heavy as it is

Find any tiredness in the body.

Behind the eyes.

Across the shoulders.

Low in the back.

Each breath out, give weight down.

Whatever is heavy may stay heavy.

Breath out, weight down.

Tiredness needs no good reason.

The body weighs what it weighs.

Breath out, weight down.

Part Four: Where it sits

Feel for where any disappointment sits.

In the throat.

Under the breastbone.

Deep in the belly.

Disappointment may sit where it sits.

Nothing has to make sense.

Breath out, weight down.

Part Five: The day can stop

Nothing more is asked today.

The day’s work can stop here.

Part Six: Nothing asked

Nothing to do now.

Breathing goes on by itself.

Weight, and the quiet.

Part Seven: Enough for today

Hear the sounds of the room.

Move the fingers a little.

The toes, as well.

Breathe in a little deeper.

And once more, a little fuller.

Notice any light through the eyelids.

Let your eyes open.

Stretch however feels good.

Say inwardly: enough for today.

The rest of the evening is yours.
