Guided meditation

Everything Humming

A hum, a wobble that slows, and one note

Lucas + TwinsMeditation20 min

Sound: A soft drone like a hum, made for this piece, with binaural tones beneath it. While your breath swings, the drone swells and settles at the pace of a slow breath, about six times a minute. In the hum, a second tone wobbles against it and slowly settles into one note.

What to expect

A calm voice guides you to notice that nothing in the body is ever completely still. You slow the breath until it swings like a pendulum, and rest where it turns. Then you hum along with a soft drone. A second tone comes in, a little off the first, and the two make a slow wobble. As you listen, the wobble slows. Where it stops, there is one note. Then comes a long, quiet rest, and you come back to the room.

Under it, a soft drone like a hum, made for this piece, swells and settles at the pace of a slow breath, about six times a minute, while your breath swings. Binaural tones sit beneath it.

How to listen:

  • Sitting or lying down, on headphones or a speaker. Never while driving.
  • Hum any note near the drone that feels easy. There is no right note.
  • If you don’t hear a wobble, just keep listening. It still works.
  • The last few minutes are very quiet on purpose. Nothing has stopped.

About

Safety and aftercare. You can stop at any point. Never hold your breath. The rest at the turn of the breath is only as long as it comes on its own. If you feel tingling, pressure in the head, or dizziness, open your eyes and breathe normally. Take a moment before you stand up at the end. This is a way of resting. It isn’t a treatment for anything.

Opening

Nothing in this room is completely still.

Not the air. Not the floor. Not you.

Let’s listen for it.

Notice what holds your hips up.

Both legs.

Each hand.

The ground beneath all of it.

Let the ground do the holding.

Your weight goes down by itself.

Part One: The knock under everything

Find your heartbeat in the chest.

The throat.

Both wrists.

Fingertips.

Feeling none is fine; keep listening.

Notice any small sway it makes.

Nothing here is completely still.

The knock keeps going by itself.

Part Two: The breath swings

Slow the breath into a swing.

In, to one end.

Out, to the other.

At each end, it turns.

It turns by itself.

Rest there, at the turn.

Rest without holding anything.

At the turn, say inwardly: here.

Rest at the turn.

Rest at the turn.

Part Three: The breath gets a voice

Breathe in through the nose.

Hum on the out-breath, lips closed.

Any note that comes easily.

Feel the hum in your chest.

Your face.

The top of the head.

Hum on the out-breath.

The in-breath comes by itself.

Hum.

Part Four: The wobble slows

Find the low note under everything.

Hum on the out-breath, any note near it.

Let your hum rest on it.

Keep humming along with it.

Close notes make a wah, wah, wah, soft and slow.

Listen for that wobble.

Hearing none, simply keep listening.

Hum on the out-breath.

No effort; only listening.

Listen for the wobble slowing.

Slower still.

Where it stops, one note.

Hum with it.

Part Five: The silence it moved in

Let the last hum end.

Listen to the silence after.

The silence the sound moved in.

Rest in it.

Find the breath, swinging.

Rest at the turn.

Part Six: Carrying the turn

Let the breath grow fuller.

Move your fingers and toes.

Sense the room around you.

Later, at a red light, find the turn of the breath.

Bring that turn with you.
