What to expect

Nothing Held — a 21-minute guided meditation, read by Lee

Somewhere in the last few days, something made you glad, maybe so small you barely noticed. This one settles the body, rests in the space around you and lets things come and go, then remembers a moment of gladness and lets attention rest in the middle of the chest, where gladness is welcome without being worked for. A long, quiet rest follows, and an easy return.

How to listen:

  • Sit or lie down somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. Never while driving or walking.
  • Headphones help: the music carries soft binaural tones.
  • The voice leaves long silences between its lines. They are part of the practice.
  • If anything feels like too much, open your eyes, move, and feel what is holding you up.

About

Before you listen. Sitting or lying down, somewhere you can close your eyes for a while. Not while driving.

Safety and aftercare. You can stop at any point: open your eyes, move, and feel what is holding you up. If a memory that comes to mind is painful, leave it and choose another, or stop for now. If you feel unsettled afterwards, move, walk, eat something, and talk with someone.

Credits. The descent follows the guided meditations of Dr Joe Dispenza. Letting what comes pass through, and the heart that beats by itself, are after Michael Singer’s talks; gladness for no reason is his as well.

Opening

Somewhere in the last few days, something made you glad.

Maybe so small you barely noticed.

The first sip of something warm. A dog happy to see you.

It’s worth a second look.

So for a while, there’s nowhere to get to.

Nothing to work for just yet.

Sit or lie down, comfortable and easy.

Let your hands rest.

Close your eyes.

Let your face soften.

Your shoulders, too.

And your belly.

Notice the breath, moving by itself.

Let it be as it is.

Part One: Space

Notice the space ahead of you.

Behind you.

Above your head.

Out to either side.

Below you.

Rest attention in all that space.

Notice the space around each sound.

The size of the room.

Finding nothing is practice, too.

Part Two: Letting go

Let each thought come and go.

Each sound, as well.

Any feeling, the same way.

Allow whatever arrives to leave.

Notice that noticing is going on, by itself.

That is already enough.

Rest here, with room for something good.

Part Three: A gladness remembered

Let yourself remember when gladness came. Any small time of your own.

A laugh, some sunlight, a kind word.

Notice what the memory brings now.

A little is plenty.

Gladness never needed a reason.

Let gladness be welcome here.

Part Four: The middle of the chest

Allow the memory to fade, in its own time.

Notice the middle of the chest.

The heart beats there, by itself.

Rest attention there, at ease.

Whatever is here, let it be enough.

Welcome here.

Part Five: Rest

Rest here, simply.

Let everything be as it is.

Welcome.

Allow resting to go on.

Part Six: Return

Notice your body, resting here.

Whatever is beneath you.

The sounds in the room.

Let your fingers move a little.

Arms and shoulders, too.

Let yourself remember these minutes.

Inwardly, say: I can let go.

Open your eyes when ready.

Let gladness come and go.

Always welcome here.
