Boat Floating from Dock

A voice on the dock lets your boat drift away, until only the water is left

Sound: Soft, slow tones made only from pure sine waves, with soft binaural tones beneath them. Small waves lap against a wooden boat, and they grow calmer twice, once as the boat drifts and again as the voice goes.

What to expect

This is for falling asleep. You picture yourself lying in a wooden boat beside a dock on a calm night. Little waves lap at the wood. The voice is close by, on the dock. After a while it lets the rope go, and the boat drifts out. With every line the voice is a little farther away, until you can’t hear it anymore. Then the music and the water carry on for about twenty minutes, calmer than before. The voice speaks for about twenty-five minutes, and the whole recording is about forty-five.

Under it, soft, slow tones play, made only from pure sine waves, with soft binaural tones beneath them. Small waves lap against a wooden boat. They grow calmer twice, once as the boat drifts and again as the voice goes.

How to listen:

  • In bed, with the volume low. Never while driving.
  • Headphones help. The voice moves farther off and drifts from side to side as the boat turns.
  • You don’t have to follow the words. It’s fine to fall asleep before the end.

About

Safety and aftercare. You can stop at any point, move, or turn on a light. If you often can’t get to sleep, and it has gone on for weeks, talk to a doctor. Insomnia is common, and it can be treated. This is a way of resting. It isn’t a treatment for any sleep problem.

Opening

Settle in, whatever way is comfortable.

Your thoughts can keep going.

They can be here as they are.

Notice the weight of your head.

The shoulders.

Both arms.

Your back.

Hips.

The legs.

Both feet.

What is under you holds all of that.

The breath goes by itself.

Notice the out-breath.

However long it is.

And the pause after it.

Notice your weight where you rest.

Slower can come by itself.

Heavy is fine.

Tired is fine too.

Part One: The boat by the dock

Now picture a wooden boat.

It rests beside a dock.

You’re lying in it.

Feel it under you.

The night is calm.

The water moves just a little.

Hear my voice from the dock.

Close by, and clear.

Just above you, at the dock’s edge.

Hear the little waves.

Lapping at the wood.

Feel the boat rock.

Feeling very little is fine.

A rope holds it close.

The boat holds you.

Hear my voice from the dock.

Part Two: The little waves

Hear the little waves.

Each one laps the wood.

Then a little quiet.

And another.

Soft, and soft again.

Just listen for a while.

Feel the boat rock.

Gently, one way.

And back again.

The breath goes by itself.

Feel the cool night air.

Your face.

The hands.

The little waves, under you.

Stars, far overhead, over the calm water.

Smell the wood and water.

Hear my voice from the dock.

The water does the rocking.

Part Three: Easing away

I let the rope go, gently.

The boat eases away from the dock.

The boat drifts by itself.

Slowly, on calm water.

The dock grows smaller.

Let the day stay on the dock.

The jaw can rest.

The eyes.

The hands.

Feel the boat rock.

Hear the little waves.

The water carries you.

My words can drift past.

Just this drifting.

Resting here is fine.

Part Four: Farther out

The dock is far behind.

Far off, the dock.

Hear the little waves.

Feel the boat rock.

The breath goes by itself.

The sky is wide.

The water holds the boat.

The boat holds you.

My words can drift past.

Heavy is fine.

The night is calm.

The boat keeps drifting.

Part Five: Only the water

Hear the little waves.

Feel the boat rock.

Only the water now.

The boat keeps drifting.
