Drink Water, Small Return — a 13-minute meditation, read by Lucas

Water is one of the simplest kindnesses you can give yourself, and one of the easiest to forget. This meditation builds a tiny habit to carry it for you. You rest beside still water, remember a sip you enjoyed, and practise a small gesture, an empty hand rising toward your mouth, with the words “As my hand rises, I remember water.” Then you rehearse it in ordinary moments of the day, and end by taking a real sip.

How to listen:

  • Sitting or lying down, with a glass of water within reach.
  • No headphones needed. Never while driving.
  • Drink only if a sip feels welcome.

Water is one of the simplest kindnesses you can give yourself.

And one of the easiest to forget.

A tiny habit can carry it for you.

So let’s practise one now.

So for a while, there’s nothing to remember.

Nothing to do just yet.

Get comfortable. Feel the support beneath you. Let your hands rest.

Let your eyes close gently, or rest your gaze.

Feel your breath coming and going. Let it find its own easy rhythm.

Bring your attention to your forehead. Let it soften. Let your jaw rest easily.

Let your shoulders settle. Feel your arms resting. Let your hands soften.

Feel the support beneath your back and hips. Let your legs rest. Notice your feet.

Notice the space around your hands.

Notice the space around your face.

Let your attention widen into the space around your body. Let whatever you notice be enough.

Let what’s under you carry your weight.

Let this moment be simple. Rest here.

Picture a quiet, shaded place beside still water. Let the scene take whatever shape comes easily.

Imagine resting beside the water. Notice the soft light on its surface. Imagine the air against your skin.

Bring to mind a sip of water you enjoyed. Recall its temperature against your lips. Remember its taste and the feeling of swallowing. Stay with whichever detail comes easily.

Bring your attention gently to one empty hand. Feel it resting.

Slowly raise that empty hand toward your mouth. Choose an easy, comfortable height.

As your hand rises, say quietly inside: “As my hand rises, I remember water.”

Let your hand settle again. Picture your water nearby. Imagine choosing a comfortable sip. Recall the detail you enjoyed. Let the gesture, the reminder, and that simple pleasure come together.

Once more, gently raise your empty hand. “As my hand rises, I remember water.”

Lower your hand. Let the words settle.

Choose one moment that comes every day, like finishing a task. “When I finish a task, my hand rises, and I remember water.”

Picture a familiar moment in your morning. Imagine sitting at your desk, or resting between tasks. Imagine your empty hand moving toward your face.

Practise remembering: “Water.”

Imagine pausing to notice whether a drink would feel welcome. Picture reaching for your water when it does. Imagine taking a comfortable sip. Then carrying on with your day.

Picture yourself busy with something this afternoon. In the middle of it, imagine your empty hand rising toward your mouth. Rehearse that small reminder again: “As my hand rises, I remember water.”

Imagine catching the reminder, right in the middle of what you’re doing.

Picture a quiet moment in your evening. Rehearse noticing your empty hand near your face. Let it remind you to consider water. Picture choosing: a drink now, or a pause and a return to your evening.

Let your hand rest.

Rest here for a little while.

Feel the support beneath you. Feel your feet.

Move your fingers gently. Let your eyes open fully. Look around the room.

When you feel fully alert, raise your empty hand once more. “As my hand rises, I remember water.”

Let your hand come down. If a drink feels welcome, reach for your water. Take a comfortable sip. Give yourself time to swallow. Notice the temperature and taste. Enjoy whatever feels pleasant about this sip.

Place the water within easy reach. Continue with your day.
